biography
Lucy Liuxuan Zhang is a classical and improvisational violinist, with an extensive background in science. In 2017 she started collaborating with Pamela Davis Kivelson on the Perceptron project. Their Perceptron project improvises music, drawings/paintings and performance. They source material from novel ideas, such as physical phenomena and scientists.
As an improvisational violinist, Lucy has collaborated with independent singer-songwriters Kaitlyn Rathwell (or “K. La Luna”) and M.D. Edwards. She was featured in M.D. Edwards’ album “Empty Head Words”, released in 2013 (available through https://mdedwards.bandcamp.com/album/empty-head-words). She has also performed as an improvisational violinist at the American Physical Society’s March Meeting. In 2015, she performed the first movement of Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 as soloist with the Chinese Artists Society of Toronto (CAST) Academy of Chamber Music for Young Musicians. Besides performing locally in Kitchener-Waterloo and in Toronto, starting in 2015, Lucy travels to perform at scientific institution including Google (July 2015 and December 2016), Caltech (August 2015), MIT (December 2016) and the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP, September and October 2017). Lucy is also an avid chamber musician, forming the Quantum Connections Trio with cellist Miriam Stewart-Kroeker and pianist Renee Kruisselbrink in 2017. Past orchestral highlights include the Sneak Peek Orchestra 2012-2014, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada 2001 and being a Co-Concertmaster of the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute Orchestras 2015.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Math & Physics, and a Master’s in Physics from University of Toronto. She’s a Ph.D. candidate in Mathematics at the University of Toronto, researching topics related to quantum computing and topological phases from a mathematical perspective.
